Information for First Timers

We look forward to welcoming you to Bikram Yoga Sandy. Our experience in teaching hundreds of classes to thousands of new students has shown us that a regular Bikram Yoga practice will change your life in many wonderful ways.

When most people think of yoga, images of chanting and people maneuvering into seemly impossible positions come to mind. Yoga is not just for the fantastically flexible. In fact, if you are not flexible, if you cannot touch your toes, or perhaps cannot even see your toes, you are a perfect candidate for the benefits of yoga.

Whether you have not exercised in a decade or just completed a marathon, Bikram Yoga provides a challenging, engaging, and effective way to improve your health and overall wellbeing. While we cannot guarantee your experience will be easy, we know that with determination and patience, you can change your life from the inside out — physically, emotionally, and mentally. We have seen it happen countless times.

You may be feeling a little intimated, nervous, and question whether you can live up to what you may have heard about the demands of a Bikram Yoga Class. Whatever you may be feeling is normal, natural, and perfect! With a little preparation, and a lot of trust, you will be well on your way to achieving your goals and more.

Be prepared to sweat and have a great time!

Here are a few guidelines to help you prepare for your first class so that you have the best possible experience.

When should I arrive?

  • First time student registration ends 15 minutes prior to class.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Proper attire: wear something light and fitted, comfortable exercise clothing
  • Positive attitude
  • Empty stomach
  • Proper Hydration
  • Bottle of water
  • Two large towels, one for the studio (one large enough to cover your whole mat) and one for your shower after class
  • Yoga mat, we have mats available if you don’t have one
  • New Student Registration Card
  • $39 Intro Offer (Utah residents who are first-time students at the studio)

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR FIRST CLASS

  • You might feel very tired after class. This is absolutely normal and a good sign that your body is cleansing. Your energy levels should be restored to normal within several classes.
  • You might find yourself feeling extremely energetic and experience difficulty sleeping. Do not worry — this is a good sign that the yoga is truly filling you up with energy. You do not have insomnia. You just have more time to do the things you enjoy.
  • You might feel sore or stiff the day after your first class. Come back to class as soon as possible! Your body is waking up and coming alive and you want to keep the process going!
  • You might feel nauseous, dizzy or have a headache after class. This could be a sign that you are dehydrated. Please drink lots of water before returning to class. Or it could be a sign that you were trying so hard that you weren't breathing normally. Please breathe normally during every posture.
  • You might experience some skin irritation. This too is normal, it means that the skin is releasing toxins. Showering directly after class will wash the toxins away. It will also help normalize the body temperature.
  • You might feel very hungry after class for a while, or you might lose your appetite completely. Both reactions are normal. If you are concerned about your weight, do not worry too much either way. Once you get into a regular practice pattern, your appetite and your weight will normalize. You will find yourself feeling and looking leaner and younger.
